#YaGetMe Interview Series – OmniBud (Baltimore, MD)

Welcome to #YaGetMe – a dive into the American Grime Scene to get to know the artists who continue to push their passion and their sound.

Whoaaaa! Representing the nefarious Bodymore, Murdaland, we meet a DJ/Producer who’s live sets have landed him in front of grime heavyweights like Spooky, Preditah and more. A part of the DC/Baltimore outfit known as the UKG Social, and a major force rising in the stateside grime movement…

This is Omnibud.

Introduce yourself. Tell us who you are and what you do.

I’m Gene McGill aka DJ Omnibud from Baltimore, Maryland. I am a DJ and producer for UKG Social.

Since you’ve been in music, who have been your major influences?

I played saxophone for 20 years so jazz music is big. Early 90’s hip hop , Miami Bass and Baltimore Club music. Also Stevie Wonder, Sticky, Wookie and MJ Cole.

#YaGetMe Interview Series – Dev79 (Philadelphia, PA)

Welcome to #YaGetMe – a dive into the American Grime Scene to get to know the artists who continue to push their passion and their sound.

This time, we hit Philly again to catch up with a DJ/Producer that thrives behind one of several midi controllers or behind the decks. No stranger to the business side of things, this savant cofounded labels Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey Records with long time partner Starkey. With a slew of releases under his belt and a pension for bass…

This is Dev79.

Introduce yourself. Tell us who you are and what you do.

7Nine. I smash and I bang.

Since you’ve been in music, who have been your major influences?

Really I’d say that life and interactions are my biggest influence. Experiences and emotions are the linchpin to creating music and art.

Link me to your Top 3 Favorite songs right now.

Massappeals & Snowy – Do / Donts

JT The Goon – Flux Capacitor

Foxsky – Puppy Parade

What does American Grime mean to you?

Hmmm to me its just another expansion of the grime sound. Grime is inherently UK music but without the world embracing it on a larger scale it wouldn’t be able to grow and flourish and of course we all want it to grow and flourish.

What American Grime artists (producer or mc) do you like?

Starkey, College Hill, MC Twisty, Korma, MC Jumanji, El Carnicero, Tiimbs, Letta, to name a few.

Favorite toppings on a pizza?

I’m bout that turkey sausage & arugula.

Any shout outs?

Big up purple kush, taco Tuesdays and all the underground music fans that support adventurous artists carving their own paths.

#YaGetMe Interview Series – Crowell (Charlotte, NC)

Welcome to #YaGetMe – a dive into the American Grime Scene to get to know the artists who continue to push their passion and their sound.

Although he’s from Charlotte, NC, you’re less likely to find him there than any new destination on the horizon for this rising star. Australia, Amsterdam, Chicago, Miami, Denver… this DJ/Producer is seriously on the move. Playing show to show, it’s a wonder how he ever has time to sit and make BANGERS,  but he does. Representing the best in Dubstep, he now turns his sights on grime.

This is Crowell.

Well my name is Emmanuel, aka Crowell and I’m an MC, Producer and DJ all wrapped in one.  Lowr Levls Is my crew and family.

What does American Grime mean to you?

American Grime to me is a new movement of MCs and Producers that the UK should be on the lookout for.  I feel like America is the perfect place for grime to expand, a lot of grime gets dropped all over the states just people don’t know the tunes or artists. Grime in America was bound to happen.

#YaGetMe Interview Series – Starkey (Philadelphia, PA)

We are proud to announce a new interview series called #YaGetMe – a dive into the American Grime Scene to get to know the artists who continue to push their passion and their sound.

We start the series out with a pioneer in American Bass music. He has been featured on the Mary Anne Hobbs show alongside Reso and vocalist Anneka on the Building the Beat series for BBC Radio 1. He is fresh off of his ALL GRIME TOUR and he takes a second to chat with us.

This is Starkey.

Trends & Boylan – “Norman Bates”

Lorenzo Senni – “Win in the Flat World”

Starkey – “Tropical (DJ Pound Remix)”

What does American Grime mean to you?

When we started Slit Jockey in 2005 our tagline was “Stateside Grime, White Label Exlusives”…. but we quickly abandoned that because in all reality, we were releasing music from people around the globe.

What American Grime artists (producer or mc) do you like?

These producers just happen to be American…

Dev79 / El Carnicero / Sublo / Rabit / Slagz

Favorite toppings on a pizza?

Pepperoni

Any shout outs?

All the Seclusiasis, Slit Jockey and NOREMIXES producers, artists, and composers.  They’re my extended family.

Broward and Palm Beach New Times – New Local Label Promotes American Grime

b-pb-new-times

When Coral Springs resident MC Jumanji and his manager Sergio Mendes didn’t hear the music they liked in South Florida, the pair decided to do something about it. They recently founded the label American Grime, named after their favorite strain of hip-hop. “Grime was a way for the London underground to express themselves,” MC Jumanji explained. “They didn’t copy rap from the U.S.; they found a new way to come at it. It’s a perfect mix of dancehall and hip-hop.”
